Cinematography

Cinematography is the art or technique of motion-picture photography. It is the technique of movie photography. It blends the use of angles and frames, colours and shades, to set a specific mood for the audience.

Conrad L. Hall was an American cinematographer from Papeete, Tahiti. He was one of very few Cinematographers to achieve name recognition. His work on films such as ‘Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid’, and ‘American Beauty’ were world renowned. He loved using different hues and shades to convey a certain feel for a scene other than just using the actors. Hall got his first Hollywood cinematographer credit on the low budget ‘The Wild Seed’. Quickly distinguishing himself with his skilful black-and-white photography.

Urban Environment

Urban environment

Street photography is an art that is used to capture the human condition in an urban environment often being surrounded by natural or man-made scenarios or objects.

Candid photography.
Candid Photography is when photos are taken without any prior preparation, usually involving motion. It is best used when the subjects are unaware that they are being captured, and when they are caught off guard doing everyday things. Some professional photographers develop candid photography into an art form. Arthur Fellig, better known as Weegee, was one of the great photographers to document life in the streets of New York to often capture life and death at their rawest edges. For example he worked at night and competed with the police to be first at the scene of a crime, selling his photographs to tabloids and photographic agencies. I think that his work is interesting and is one of the most real and raw photographers I’ve seen.

Human Presence Implied

Human Presence Implication is when you know someone has been somewhere without anyone actually being there, for example if there were a cut down tree and no one was there, you know someone has been there for the fact that the tree had been cut down.

Andy Goldsworthy.
Andy Goldsworthy’s Father was a professor of applied mathematics, being surrounded by such a logical home life could have inspired him and his work; Goldsworthy’s work is so intricate and done with such precision that he makes his work seem so natural, and it flows with the land so well, with it also sticking out like a sore thumb. The materials used in Andy Goldsworthy's art often include brightly coloured flowers, icicles, leaves, mud, pinecones, snow, stone, twigs, and thorns. His work is made from the most natural of resources; he forms them into intricate shapes that mould to their surroundings so perfectly. I love all of his work as he makes his sculptures so unnaturally natural.

Richard Long.
Richard Long is very similar to Andy Goldsworthy in the way he utilises natural materials to create amazing sculptures. He is not only a sculptor and photography, but he is a fantastic painter and illustrator. He once walked back and forth in a grassy field to create a path, he then photographed it, and that image then became a milestone in contemporary art, for the performance(action) and the sculpture(object).
